Public Speaking For Audiences That Have a Voice

Most public speaking is centered on a basis of expertise, with the intention of the speaker being to convince the audience of the 'rightness' of the speaker's view. In this way, much of public speaking is an exercise in training, with the purpose to implant in the listener what is known to the speaker.

In contrast, facilitators of the CLS Dialogue Bureau view their responsibility to be the creation of space within which the audience ceases to be 'audience' and becomes active generators of their own thinking on issues that are central to effectiveness in their personal and professional lives. Said another way, Dialogue Bureau events are exercises in education and in creating the conditions within which the listener can think thoughts that are only possible for him or her.

There is no typical structure to a Dialogue Bureau event. Some are open to the public while others are designed for a group or organization that has a specific focus in mind.

Possibilities for working with the Dialogue Bureau:

  • Bringing a facilitator in to your organization to meet with leadership or pockets of your team
  • Asking a facilitator to lead an association or group meeting
  • Organizing a group of colleagues or friends
  • Attending a Dialogue Bureau event that is open to the public (see list below)
