The role of leadership is in flux.

Our transformed marketplace is forcing a shift from the veneration of corporate predictability as the creator of value to an appreciation of a deliberately fluid environment as this century's generator of innovation and competitive advantage. This fundamental change in orientation requires a corresponding evolution in leaders and leadership.

The Center for Leadership Studies is at the forefront of this transformation, providing the fundamental tools of personal and organizational development - methodology training, expert consulting and content exploration – from the perspective of the new corporate reality: successful leaders in the 21st century will not control, they will allow.

“There is a mistaken notion in business education that it’s possible to deal with leadership, change integration and management as separate courses of study. Universities treat management as a field of study—leadership and integration are seen as mere subjects of the field. When addressed, leadership and change are electives within degree programs such as an MBA. I believe that to deal with today’s needs in organization, we must treat all three fields as related within the whole field of organization. They must be addressed as a single integrated body of knowledge with management acquired through teaching, leadership through discovery and integration through practice.”

Mel Toomey, Who Founded the Center for Leadership Studies

“The disciplines of organizational practice - Organizational Development, Human Resources and Management Consulting - that grew up in during the Industrial Era share a fundamentally engineering-oriented view of their work. Engineers work on machines, and their relationship with the machine they are working on is irrelevant to their ability to control the efficiency of that machine. Just as the role of Leadership is in flux, so too is the role of the organizational practitioner. Organizational Practice in the 21st century must be fundamentally grounded in the understanding that we work with Human Beings - not Human Capital or Human Resources or Talent or any of the other abstractions we use to avoid addressing the whole persons that make up the organization. A Practitioner's relationship with the Human Being they are working with is central to their ability to influence the effectiveness of that Human Being.”
